The 5.0 Mustang is back. After a 16 year absence Ford has channeled the past to revive the latest round of the muscle car “Horse-Power Wars”. The 5.0 moniker was first used in 1979 for the 302 ci displacement motor before it was retired in 1995 in favor of the modular 4.6L.

The latest iteration of the 5.0 has four-valve Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT). The V-8 engine in the new Mustang GT will deliver 412 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. of torque. At the same time, fuel economy is projected to be better than the previous model and will deliver an estimated 25 mpg highway and 17 in the city.

The new 412 horsepower Mustang seeks to level the ground with the 413 horsepower 6.6L Chevy Camaro. Ford hopes the new engine will drive sales that have slipped since the release of the Camaro early this year.
