The Boss is Back: 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302

2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302

Sure, the 5.0L returned for the revamped 2011 Mustang GT, but the 412 horsepower only put the Pony even with the Camaro… not in front. Ford fans were happy enough with the Coyote 5.0L engine, but worried that the new motor would be over shadowed with Chevrolet planning to tune the 6.2L SS and offer a supercharged Z28 for 2012. But Ford stepped up to the plate and brought back the Boss for 2012: The all new 440 HP Mustang Boss 302.

Its been more than 40 years since a Mustang bore the Boss insignia. “Boss is a hallowed word around here, and we couldn’t put that name on a new Mustang until we were sure everything was in place to make this car a worthy successor,” explains Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer.. “We were either going to do it right or not do it at all – no one on the team was going to let Boss become a sticker and wheel package.” Continue reading

Vintage Crash Tests. How safe is your vintage iron?

1969 Ford Mustang Wreck

What do you drive? For the past fifteen years my daily driver has been vintage or near classic (20+ years old) for all but five of those years. Countless 1960’s Mustangs and Jeeps with a Miata recently thrown in for good measure. As I get older, I tend to learn more towards function over originality. Don’t get me wrong. I am an automotive purist. I’ll curse and mutter underneath my breathe if you turn your 1967 Mustang into Eleanor. If you do it to an original Shelby, well, I might even do it to your face. Don’t get me wrong your have every right to strut around thinking your Nicholas Cage, just don’t butcher a classic Mustang to do it. (If you feel urge to own an Eleanor buy a Dynacorn Mustang Body Shell and make that a clone of a clone. ) -But what I do think is that safe minded upgrades not only increase the drive-ability and value of your car… they just might save your life. Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang make NASCAR debuts at Daytona

The return of the Dodge Challenger to the race track at Daytona International Speedway was three years in the making, according to the raw calculations of Ralph Gilles, president and CEO of the company that produces the car.

But it’s actually been much longer than that between stints on the Daytona track for the Challenger, which last graced the 2.5-mile superspeedway in the 1980s in what was then known as the Busch Series as well as the Late Model Sportsman series.

“As a car maker, we are happy. For us, it’s the return of Challenger,” Gilles said. “We have been absent almost two decades from racing.”

The return actually occurred Wednesday when five Dodge Challengers were among the 36 “new” Nationwide cars that tested Wednesday at Daytona. But it won’t become official until Friday night when the Challengers — as well as seven Ford Mustangs that will be entirely new to the series — race against each other and all other comers in the Subway Jalapeno 250.

“We haven’t had a lot of time on the track, but so far it’s really cool to drive,” Brad Keselowski said of the Challenger. “We ran a bunch of laps and seem to be really fast.”

Keselowski’s teammate at Penske Racing, Justin Allgaier, was the fastest of those behind the wheel in the new Dodges. His top lap time of 48.280 seconds, which translated to 186.413 mph, ranked 12th overall on the practice speed chart. Continue reading
